How much trouble do we go to

Post by quoll on Fri Apr 04, 2008 1:20 pm

Ok my feeding routine may sound a little out there but here goes.

Breakfast all get a small quantity of lactose free milk

Dinner main meal. twice a week just chicken necks
once a week cooked eggs like a custard (no sugar ) and veg
Most nights cooked vegetables, which I cook once a week and freeze, usualy pumkin
carrots celery, some green like brocoli, or cabbage, silver beats. usually a blend of
4 or 5 veg and to that I will add some mince which I mince myself as i buy the
chuck steak whole.

Then there is a sardine a week and a little apple cider vinegar.
the odd treat cheese, dried liver or sometimes I will buy a some hearts or liver
and cook them.

I also add a small quanity of dry biscuits in their meal.
Occasionally i will just give them tin food but that s rare.

Am I mad??? I think it s pretty balanced what do you guys think?? confused

I am changing to once a day feeds, Coco is getting fussier and I have been waisting a lot of food, so I figure if she is hungry at night she will eat what I give her and I know she is getting one good feed. I know its my own fault, I hears ya Sad actually its my OH's fault not mine Evil or Very Mad we do chicken necks a couple of times a week, even though the vet said to do them every day. Chicken and rice, dry sometimes, raw mince, raw fillet steak LOL, did I mention she was fussy!

Dinner: Lamb Neck

Tuesday:

Dinner: Duck or chicken frames

Wednesday

Dinner: Maryland, Goat ribs or or turkey wings

Thursday:

Friday

oops i posted reply instead of adding LOL i have to do it again now and hit send.

Anyway, Goat and Duck Yum. very nice human food as well. Goat is a particularly good meat, it is lean, white meat tender and light in flavour. Unless you have an old buck LOL than it s curry curry curry.
If the goat market does take as it is indicating it wioll we will soon all be enjoying more of it dogs and people.

Tell you what else i find good value, the Woolworth Roo HUMAN mince, it is lean, and it goes a long way as it is a very rich dark meat I tend to give them a little less.

Quoll can I ask why you cook all the veggies?

I feed:

Breakfast: chicken wings, necks or carcass.

Dinner
Make this up in HUGE batches once a month and freeze. Consists of carrots, broccoli, silverbeet, celery, sweet potato, swede and parsley all raw pulped through the juicer and mixed with minced frames. Add supplements: cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, safflower oil, olice oil, kelp powder, alfalfa powder, vitamin c, vitamin b, raw eggs and crushed egg shells

Then a few times a week they get lamb hearts and yoghurt.

When I started feeding raw about 18 months ago I had it all managed in a spread sheet, was really strict on measuring it all our to the ml/gm and was so anal about it all. Over time I've gotten less stressed and more flexible. If I forget to get the frozen stuff out then whoops and i use a backup can of natures gift. Also have back up Purina one biscuits in case I get caught out/need to feed them somewhere where my raw mix would be inconvenient.

The meals I feed mine are varied. Usually mince beef, lamb or chiken. Veges are processed with a stick processor and can include anything - carrots, peas. beand, corn, pumbpkin, cabbage, zucchinni... basically whatever is in the fridge. They get sardines once a week. Yoghurt 4 times a week. Eggs once a week. Pet milk every day. And a handful of kibble at night with thier meal. They are all fed twice a day.

Medications and additives vary depending on who is in at the time. At the moment we have;
Belle on an antihistamine every second day and antibiotic twice a day. She also gets a fish oil cap daily and a Vit B tab daily.

Monte gets bromide once a day and phenobarbitone twice a day. A fish oil cap daily and a Vit B tab.

Boof is on no additives for the next few days as he got into my daughter's room and scoffed a bag of milk bottles on Friday night and has had diarrhoea since but he usally would have a fish oil cap daily.

Marley has Rescue Remedy twice per day, a fish oil cap once a day and a Vit B tab twice a day.

Re: How much trouble do we go to

I should add that cost me about

ooh - say $6 for the heart and liver
$10 for the mince
$10 for the veg - if that - more like $7
$8 for the fish

so around $31-34

I made enough for 26 days worth of breakfast so if it was all they were getting about 13 days worth - which equals just over a dollar a day per dog - not bad for big dogs I reckon

That and there as leftover of the veggies andI have some left over mince from last time so I will mix that up and give it to them as dinner for a couple of nights too

Got a big bag of offcuts - nearly 5kg worth - for 2$ so I have those split and bagged too

No more dog food for a while lol

oh forgot about apples. I throw in apples too. They also get sardines and tuna a few times a week.

Good work Oc. I love doing mine in huge batches and not having to worry about it for a bit. I'm about due to make it again.

I don't find it expensive either. Obviously more expensive than feeding Good-O's but a bit cheaper than feeding a premium dog food full time.
